Blue Windows
“There comes a time in a man’s life when to get where he has to go – if there are no doors or windows he walks through a wall.”
~ Bernard Malamud
Genuine (Bull) Dur(ham)
“Most of Lange’s photography was optimistic, even utopian, not despite but precisely through its frequent depiction of sadness and deprivation. By showing her subjects as worthier than their conditions, she called attention to the incompleteness of American democracy. And by showing her subjects as worthier than their conditions, she simultaneously asserted that democracy was possible.”
~ excerpt from Dorothea Lange: A Life Beyond Limits, by Linda Gordon
I’ve been reading this book about the incredible documentary photographer, Dorothea Lange. I’m so inspired not only by Dorothea’s work, but also her drive for social action. The photo above was taken in Grants Pass, Oregon, where she spent some time shooting migrant workers.
Another thing I admire about Dorothea was her attitude. She got polio when she was seven, which left her with a severely deformed foot and a limp. But she would refer to polio as her greatest gift, because it gave her such tremendous empathy in working with her subjects. What an awesome way of thinking.
Polara
I briefly mentioned my internship at Polara here, but I definitely didn’t say enough. There’s no question that I want to spend at least part of the time working in a commercial photography studio, and Polara is an awesome one to be in (Harlem Globetrotters during the Curly Neal years – seriously, this is my kind of place). You name it, they shoot it. The pace there is fast, with easily three completely different shoots going on on any given day. Plus, sometimes Muffy, the Studio Manager, sets out an oatmeal bar for breakfast. Yes, I said oatmeal bar – I mean, how can you beat that?
ronitphoto
Another thing I’ve been working on these past few weeks is rebranding. I still need to finalize picks for my portfolio and Romeo’s working on a logo, but you can get a feel for what I’m going for here. ronitphoto will focus on (er, no pun intended) environmental portraiture, editorial and social action. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll keep my blog here, or have everything branded under my business name – any thoughts on this from photographers or any freelancing creatives out there?
Urban Landscapes
I’m so happy to announce the opening of my show, Urban Landscapes, at the Water Avenue Commerce Center, 1028 SE Water Avenue. Urban Landscapes opens today and will be up through November 30th. Seventeen images portraying grit and graffiti from the neighborhood around the Water Avenue Commerce Center itself down to Oaxaca City. You can enter the building through Water Avenue Coffee or Bunk Bar – so grab a latte or a cocktail and come and check it out!
For those of you interested in purchasing a piece from out of town, please email me at info at ronitphoto dot com, and I’ll send you a link to a web gallery along with pricing and shipping information.
Curves
If it doesn’t excite you,
This thing that you see,
Why in the world,
Would it excite me?

The Swifts
I can’t believe I’ve lived in Portland for over 15 years and only made it to see the Swifts last week. Such a fantastic sight! If you’re in Portland, here’s some info on this year’s Swift Watch, and for those of you who live elsewhere, this clip gives you an idea of what it’s like. Definitely check it out, it’s a beautiful way to spend an evening!

“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”
~ Elliott Erwitt
