From the Film Archives
It’s been a really long time since I posted a film shot. This is Babe Fakudze (babe means father in siSwati), in Etimphisini, Swaziland. Etimphisini is a tiny village in Northern Swaziland, and it’s easily one of the most beautiful places I’ve called home. Babe Fakudze was very much a part of that experience – I got to greet him almost daily for two years. But can you think of a better man to see so often? So expressive, and really kind too.
Where’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever lived in or visited? What or who made the place extra-special?
Brenden
I got together with Brenden a few weeks ago to shoot his senior portraits. Brenden grew up in the Montavilla neighborhood, so that’s where we headed. It was a sunny and crisp fall day, and I had such a great time getting to know Brenden even more. He’s applying to architecture programs, plays soccer and is part of an Irish dance troupe. Seriously, what an awesome teenager!
Gun Room Melodies
Right, so that shoot with Emily. Her band is called Gun Room Melodies, so what better place to stage some promo shots than, where else, The Gun Room? And with four musicians loaded with personality and a gun stylist (yes, I did say gun stylist), we were bound to have a good time. Gun Room Melodies is Emily Miller, DJ Woods, Darren Canfield and Nick Russo – be sure to check their fb page for future shows!
Emily (aka Annie Oakley)
Here’s a preview of a very fun shoot I’m finishing up. I met Emily a couple of years ago in our neighborhood bar, and I’ve always wanted to take her portrait. I had my chance recently when her band needed some shots. Isn’t she a natural with those guns? Annie Oakley lives on!
entermodal
It took awhile, but here are some of the final shots from the entermodal shoot! Larry Olmstead’s leather bag line is absolutely stunning, and his craftsmanship is impeccable. It was such a treat to get a behind-the-scenes view into Larry’s design process and attention to detail. His studio is filled with tools and leather and the most beautiful light, and I loved spending some time there.
Officer Chadd and Firefighter Jason
Officer Chadd and Firefighter Jason visited the school on the day I was volunteering, and along with talking to the kids about safety, they also agreed to a spontaneous photoshoot. These guys are the best – brave, committed to serving people and places in Portland that many would not go near, and so good with the kids. I just couldn’t resist taking pictures of these handsome men in uniform, who are brothers to boot.
Seal Rock
A coworker of Romeo’s had rented a place on the coast, but something came up at the last minute so he passed it on to us. Free cottage right on the beach? Score! We found the old freight train in Toledo, a little detour on the way back home. I love Oregon’s Blue Highways so much, they’re just so beautiful. And while Portland has changed drastically in the 15 years I’ve lived here, those country roads stay pretty much the same.

Here’s an outtake from the Renegade Fashion Shoot – and the reason why it’s an outtake. Tom Hassler wrote a fun post on this, check it out!
The River Ganges
![]() |
| How about that – a bit of an updated look for Sweet Ronit! Romeo has been hard at work behind the scenes dealing with themes and plug-ins and widgets. There still are some kinks to work out, but I thought I’d start blogging again anyways. And this shot of the Ganges, a symbol of purity, seemed right for the first post in the new format.
And there’s finally a new quote on the sidebar, from Jay Maisel. My mentor, Tom Hassler, introduced me to Maisel’s work a few months ago. I found this video about Jay the other day and I can’t stop thinking about it. Here is a true photographer, and, like many photographers from an older generation, he’s incredibly humble about his work. If you love photography, you must watch it! |
